Disco935 - March 22, 2014 - THE PLAYHOUSE

The Playhouse was a club in The Bronx opened in 1974 and thrived until 1976....I was hired to spin there in November 1974 and stayed there 18 months...It was mostly Italian-Americans who loved that stereotype gangster/Sopranos mentality....the staff at the bar had nicknames like Patty "Irish", Ronny "Rags", Tony "Horse", etc.....Everybody knew everybody!
The Playhouse was owned & run by Sal Abbatiello aka "Sally Abbot", who went on to open Disco Fever, that morphed into The Fever: the first RAP Niteclub that featured the young rap artists setting the trends in the early 80s. He also did many promotions that led to opening his own label Fever Records.

But this is not about THAT era.....this is about THE PLAYHOUSE & the music there....The crowd there had their favorites but also loved new sounds.....I could play 5 new jams in a row at the height of the night (1am-3am) and they would eat em up.....all they wanted to do was dance & party. And it did not matter what day of the week it could be just as packed on a Tuesday as on Friday.

This Saturday's DiscoFlight is dedicated to The Playhouse and the music I played there.....
